Today is dedicated to another introductory segment of the Epic Poem “The Odyssey”, and the difficult journey’s beginning.
Today we’ll look at the section from 25:50, to 36:00. The Odyssey home begins with difficulty, and foreshadowing the difficulty of the coming journey.
Here are some timestamps to analyze:
- 27:20 – Odysseus’ son Telemachus is now a young boy.
- 29:00 – The women in charge are struggling with how to handle Odysseus absence.
- 35:00 – Land, but whose land is it?
Assignment for today: (10 points)
The Cyclops (Polyphemus) represents brute physical force. Try to figure out the puzzle: If you and your crew were trapped in his cave, how would you escape?
Facts: – 20 ton stone blocks the door
– sheep leave twice a day
– Cyclops will not respond to reason
– He is 25 feet tall
– He eats people
